| Session 1: Welcome and Introductory Comments |
SPEAKER:
David Malmuth
TIME: 8:15 – 8:35 am |
In this brief opening segment David Malmuth will outline goals for the day, set a tone of candor and collaboration, and introduce the key themes to be explored during the symposium. Attendees will be encouraged to consider the following questions as the day progresses:
- What art/culture development strategies have worked in other locations?
- How can these approaches be utilized in San Diego?
- What current SD initiatives are working and deserve more support?
- What would it mean to SD to become recognized nationally as a leader in cultivating arts and artists and what impact would it have on our regional economy and cultural tourism?
- What specific steps can we take to become a leader in building our creative economy?
- How can the Downtown Waterfront become a symbol and centerpiece of a thriving downtown arts and culture scene?
Additionally, I will describe how during the day we will highlight a number of key research findings on the impact of arts/culture on the economics and quality of city life (e.g., what was the number of attendees at art/cultural events nationally in 2008, how much did they spend, and how does that compare to attendance at sport events?).

Our talented creative team, including Stan Eckstut and Marco Li Mandri, envisions a San Diego “front-porch” -- including The North Embarcadero, the Navy Broadway Complex, Lane Field, The Navy Pier, and the G Street Mole -- that is beautifully designed, thoughtfully programmed, and alive with the dynamic interweaving of arts and cultural elements. Marco Li Mandri, who has successfully nurtured the Little Italy BID, will then share his plan for a waterfront improvement district that can bring the management and marketing expertise needed to sustain this vitality. Our downtown waterfront should become the treasured destination of the entire region, a place for San Diegans first.
